The North Carolina Granite Corporation
By: Masha Persanova

The North Carolina Granite Corporation quarry is located in the picturesque town of Mount Airy. When I first saw it from the special observation platform it looked like huge open ice sea. Big granite blocks were snow white with a light grey tint. The quarry is in the shape of an enormous oyster shell and covers about 90 acres currently under operation.

How did granite appear?  This rock began as molten magma within the earth’s surface. Centuries of time forced the magma to a higher plane where it gradually cooled and solidified under the weight and pressure of natural mountains into masses of stone that we now call granite.

Granite deposits are found all over the world, although they are not always easily accessible for quarrying. The deposits are often formed in layers known as “Bed Planes”.  Mount Airy’s Granite deposits are a solid mass free from natural bed planes and vertical cracks. Geologists predict that this quarry can be used for approximately 500 more years without exhausting the supply.
