Recycling

By: Celia Glenn

Recently, the US has been saving gas and being careful of using too much because of the increased prices. The gas prices have been cut in half since the beginning of this year. Some Americans have also realized the importance of recycling and reusing what they already have. In my family, we reuse the water bottles we buy instead of throwing away every one we drink from. It’s so simple to just wash/sterilize and refill them instead of buying more and more cases of water every time you go to the grocery store. Do you know how much plastic that’s saving? Let’s just say a lot. Think about that “a lot” number if every US citizen carried that out; just reusing water bottles. So far US citizens have been doing a good steward of fossil fuels; which are elements of the earth that cannot be made by man, such as oil or coal.
What about reduce, reuse, or recycle? We all see the reusable grocery bags that are for sale in the stores so we don’t have to deal with the, maybe seven, plastic bags every time we shop. We all see the signs on bottles and near recycling places or near dumpsters that say “Reduce, reuse, recycle!” with the triangular symbol of arrows. Well do we actually recycle? Most Americans don’t, unfortunately. I know I’m starting to sound like an environmentalist but protecting our world is important. For the places we live in today, we should all want to protect God’s creation.
I recently saw a recycling commercial nof a little girl who talks about when parents say they could give the world to their child because they love them. Then she asks if when they say they’d give her the world, did they mean overloaded dumpsters, landfills, poverty, disease, pollution, trashy cities, and everything else? Then she asks us to recycle.
You may ask yourself why you should recycle. Maybe you ask yourself what you would recycle and where to go in order to recycle some of the trash you would usually throw away. Maybe you consider recycling a hassle rather than to just throw the trash away. Well here are the good things about recycling. You’re not wasting cardboard, paper, or plastic when you reuse it. If you do this then it means less garbage to fill the ground with. Recycling also reduces the amount of trash in cities. Wouldn’t that be something great! Not seeing plastic cups and paper bags and paper and wrappers blowing around the streets, in the way of the cars. That would be something new, to not see trash on the sides of the roads.
No matter what recyclable trash you feel you should throw away, always recycle it; it’s worth it.  Your children and grand children are worth it.
