Mount Airy – is an ideal American town that was the inspiration for the popular series The Andy Griffith Show which originally aired in the 1960s. Andy Griffith’s birth home is now a bed and breakfast. There is also a museum located in the Mount Airy Visitors Center with several rooms dedicated to the Andy Griffith story.
Walking around this town sometimes you get confused and think that you stepped back in time and are really in the fictitious town of Mayberry. Many local businesses have Mayberry in their name. Everything reminds you of the characters in the show and the places where they used to go. For example the Historic Old City Jail is a local re-creation of “The Courthouse” seen in so many episodes of the TV series. You can walk inside and even appear behind the bars.
We couldn’t go past Snappy Lunch, Mount Airy’s oldest eating establishment, without trying a “taste” of Mayberry. The restaurant was mentioned in the show and it’s famous for the pork chop sandwich, which was created by Charles Dowell the restaurant’s owner who has been serving happy visitors lunch for more than 50 years.
If you want to have a complete tour of the fun and nostalgic Mayberry you can take a cruise in a vintage 1962 Squad Car Replica. You will ride over to Andy’s Homeplace, then down to Main Street past Floyd’s Barbershop and Snappy Lunch. You will cruise by the Andy Griffith’s Playhouse, the Old Jail and the world’s largest open granite quarry. The quarry is the world leader in supplying the highest quality white granite.
