Woooo hoooo it’s that time of year again. The time when all of the single people want to cry and the couples of the world go out in search of the perfect gift, the perfect card and the perfect bouquet of flowers. The question is , how many of us really know what Valentines Day is really about? I mean isn’t it hard enough to maintain a relationship in today’s society without the pressure of Cupid’s arrow in your spine? I think it is but that’s just my personal opinion. Lucky me… I get to voice it when I want to!
Anyway, I thought I’d take the opportunity to pass along some interesting information that I found out this year. Years ago February 14th wasn’t Valentines Day and it wasn’t a day full of roses and chocolates. It was actually a pretty sad day for many women when the ancient Romans were all a part of a fertility festival. They believed that being whipped with strips of animal hide would actually make them more fertile! Insane right?
Centuries later the Christian community celebrated Saint Valentine who supposedly preformed marriage ceremonies for soldiers when they were forbidden by the emperor.
It has only been in recent years that Valentines Day has become so commercialized and the emphasis has been put on gifts and amazing dates.
Love is about so much more than what material item someone has to offer because the calendar has a heart on it. I think that days like these are the very reason that couples fail to spend the quality time that they should in order to keep romance alive year around.
I’m not saying that anyone should ignore their sweetheart on V-Day but maybe we should all take a little time to think about what we could do to improve things on a daily basis and how we can show love and appreciation to all who pass through our lives.
