Have you ever stopped to think about just how much the internet has changed our everyday life. I didn’t really think about it until one day our internet connection and cable went out leaving me with no internet service. The television being out didn’t phase me. For that matter I don’t even think I noticed it being off. However, not once or twice but about four times I walked over and took a seat at my desk before I realized that I was unable to “surf the net”. I have become so dependent on it that I had to really stop and think about what I did “pre internet era
For directions to anywhere I want or need to go, I head to MapQuest or Yahoo Maps. For the phone numbers that I need I go straight to yellowpages.com. For medical question…WebMD.com. As a matter of fact, who needs to even worry about catching your favorite show on time anymore. For that there are websites for all of the local station as well as surfthechannel.com and watch-movies.net. Not that long ago I watched an experiment on a local news channel. They rented an apartment for a week and had the newscaster to volunteer to stay in the apartment with no access to the outside world other than what she could do via the internet. Well, at first it seemed like it would a major challenge. If nothing else, depressing. I was really surprised when I started to see all of the things she could do online. She had no phone line but she did have a computer with a microphone and speakers. Thus allowing her to make phone calls online through fonecalls4free.com! Ordering food was as easy as signing up to your local pizza hut or other carryout and placing your order there. If that’s not enough, you can even read books online now. A lot of local libraries have certain books that you can download for free from their site. Others are downloadable for about the same amount of money that you would spend on a paperback at a regular book store. Hours and hours of entertainment is right at your fingertips as long as you have an internet connection.
As if we don’t have enough to keep us busy online, there is youtube.com as well. A place where people all over the world tape their talents, funny skits, how to video’s and just about any and everything else you could think of. I couldn’t possibly begin to tell you all of the things you can do online. From dating sites and cooking shows to online colleges and communication tools, it would probably be easier for me to tell you what you can’t do online. Off the top of my head, smelling and physical touch is about the only thing I can think off. Just for fun I have listed the top ten most popular sites and although you may not find it to be the funniest, the most viewed viral video. It didn’t really surprise me but nonetheless it was fun to take a look at… Enjoy!
