Now I know we all have that one crazy neighbor down the street who decides to go all out with the house lights and the garlands and the insane blow up inflatable of Santa, Rudolph, and the Christmas tree with all of its presents while fake little snow balls fly around inside the plastic globe. But isn’t that what makes Christmas fun; to drive around and judge whose house looks the weirdest or has the most color or whose house you can’t even recognize because their so obsessed with the candy canes and the lights on the bushes and as a border on the house and the multi-colored lights strung up in their trees like one Christmas tree isn’t enough!
Now stores start selling Christmas decorations and those funny yet wacky inflatable snow globes before Halloween. Did you know that’s over two months before the holiday itself? That blows me away! Then on TV there are the commercials about how the particular store has them in full stock, so you’d better get them before they run out! Can’t you just see your funny decoration and Christmas-obsessed neighbor going to that store just so he can get all of his little animals and candy canes two months before the holiday actually comes!? I think those fun-filled neighbors do that on purpose, to give the neighborhood some funny holiday cheer.
Just last year I was spending the night with a friend. We were in our pajamas and watching a movie. Her mom told us to get in the car! It was like nine o’clock at night! We had no idea what we were going to do but we just got in the car. Her mom drove us around their neighborhood and we looked and laughed at the craziness of some of the houses. From glowing Santas on the rooftops to huge ornaments hanging from the front porches, it was amazing. She drove on to a couple of nearby neighborhoods, all of us pointing out the most dramatic décor and how one house was just engulfed by lights. We were sure it could be seen from space. Wouldn’t that be fun! To be flying over brightly lit houses in an airplane during the night! I think that would be fun. Then you could really tell whose house was the brightest!
The reason I know so much about inflatable yard ornaments, jumbo candy canes and the whole process of going all out is because my aunt is a victim of this contagious disease we like to call the Christmas Decoration Disease. She and my uncle are a hysterical couple and their decorations say it all. They have a very small front yard and yet the have somehow managed to cram about three inflatable yard ornaments in it. They have jumbo candy canes that line their sidewalk and a lit archway over the candy cane walkway and here are lights strung over every bush. This sad behavior is fueled by the “serious competition” across the street. It’s actually pretty hilarious and I love it. It’s the only time of the season that their house looks transformed by lights and inflatable people and manger scenes and snowmen everywhere!!
If you’re the funny neighbor that is reading this, then good job! Go ahead and add whatever you want to your house and yard, it gives the rest of your friends and neighbors something to enjoy over the season. And again, thanks for making the holidays festive.
