It’s 2:00 AM and you have tossed and turned for the last forty-five or so minutes. You’ve gotten a drink of water and made your way to the bathroom and still, there is not a sleepy bone in your body. Finally you decide to turn on the old TV and see what you can find, right? Well, good luck with that! More than likely you are stuck with watching an movie from back in 1959 or you have a mass array of infomercials to chose from. Lucky you! Nothing else to watch so even though you may be bald, for some reason you find yourself extremely intrigued by the infomercial and its amazing ability to straighten the thickest and curliest hair you have ever seen! Why is that? What is it about those things that draw you in like a magnet to metal? Is it the tone of voice? Maybe the beauty of the models they are using? Possibly the fast talking or exciting personalities? I’m not really sure and thus far I haven’t been able to find an exact and proven answer. The fact that they catch your eye isn’t really making a difference BUT what is really effecting us, at least some of us is that they effect our wallets!
Whether it’s the persuasion that is used or you are ready to buy from the start, the question is “Does it really work”? Unlike purchasing something at your local five and dime where a return is usually as easy as 1, 2,3 , you cannot walk back to the TV and shove the product into your DVD slot and wait for your money to come spewing back out! You are forced to pack it back up, usually pay for shipping back to the consumer and you have to take your time to take it to the post office or schedule a pick up. The companies that sell you these things are more than likely expecting you to say “forget it, its just not worth the time”. They even go so far now as to be nice enough to offer you a 30 day trial period for only 14.95 or some figure close to that. How nice of them! Basically what they are saying is that for a small fee you can TRY their product and if you don’t like you are more than welcome to pay for it to be returned. If you do like it then they will politely charge your card the additional amount of the product on top of your “trail fee”. I don’t know about you but in my math book that’s called ROBBERY!
But wait! There is hope yet! Nowadays the local stores such as Wal-Mart and Target have wised up. They have decided to sell those very same products in their stores. Usually they are located next to the check out or in a special “As seen on TV” section of the store. The “infomercial” items that you buy at stores like these are 100% returnable and exchangeable just as any other item bought there is! A few years back their used to be a store that was specifically for things seen on TV but as you can imagine, it didn’t do well. The reason being is that it to was a seasonal and temporary store thus making it very difficult to return unwanted or broken items.
If you are still insistent upon buying products over the telephone or internet you can at least do some research first. A lot of local news stations have a portion titles “Does it really do that?” or “Does that really work”. You can also take a minute to look it up on the internet. Below are a few links to places that you may be able to find some good information. Regardless of who says it, we all have to keep in mind that it is all based on someone’s opinion. One man’s junk is another mans treasure!
