Beyond the Garden Gates
By: Craig Shipp

According to the press release offered by the city of Frederick’s Office of special Events: “This self-guided tour offers visitors a unique peek into some of Frederick’s finest private and public gardens.† From sweet fragrances and lush colors, to unique uses of small spaces, guests are often surprised at what they find.”†

After reading this article be sure to click on the photo tour link below and you’ll see that the statement above may have been understated. Not only was this garden tour a “unique peek” into many beautiful gardens but it was an opportunity for garden lovers from all over the area to mix and share their gardening tips and tricks. Some were reacquainted with old friends and others were bitten by the gardening bug and were off to the nearest gardening center for supplies. I saw one car parked outside the last stop on the tour full of flowers ready to be planted in their new home.

It’s no wonder this tour is such an inspiration to want-a-be gardeners. At every stop on the tour the host and Garden Club volunteers are eager to answer questions and share their years of expertise. Now I know why in addition to first time day-trippers and tourists there are many locals who take this tour every year. The tour, in effect, is a series of mini gardening seminars that anyone interested in beautiful gardens wouldn’t want to miss.

Celebrate Frederick is a private non-profit organization that partners with the City of Frederick to plan and produce 13 special events each year. The events include: “Beyond the Garden Gates” Garden Tour, Summer Concert Series, Summer Nite Cinema, Frederick’s 4th – an Independence Day Celebration, Summerfest Family Theatre, IN THE STREET, and seven events during the holiday season.

Celebrate Frederick’s mission is to offer the community a shared cultural experience. As such, each event has its own committee, made up entirely of volunteers from the community. These committees work with the Office of Special Events’ staff of three to develop and produce the events.

The events are supported by sponsor donations from the local business community, and from in-kind support from The City of Frederick. Thanks to their generosity, admission to the events is either free or very low cost. Some of the events, such as Frederick’s 4th – an Independence Day Celebration and IN THE STREET, attract an audience of 50,000 or more.† Video Channel:
